    Entretien de Benefits Specialist

    Candidat à l'entretien anonyme - Plano, TX (États-Unis)
    Offre refusée
    Expérience négative
    Entretien facile

    Candidature

J'ai postulé via un recruteur. Le processus a pris 1 jour. J'ai passé une entrevue à Aflac (Plano, TX (États-Unis)) en octobre 2017.

    Entretien

Very misleading up to the interview date. The position they reached out to me about was for benefits specialists or coordinator for a team of specialist - basically, they want you to sign up as "benefits specialist", a title that masks what that job position is actually for, which is an insurance salesman. And the coordinator position is "granted" after you sell a # of insurance plans. When questions were asked prior to the interview via email, the recruiter insisted that i come in for the interview and ask the director in person. No where in the email did it say this was a position primarily in sales, the word 'sales' wasn't even mentioned when that's what that job is for. When I walked in, i realized that this was a group interview, and the interview was actually a sales pitch for what aflac is to their interviewees. Basically, they should have paid us for our time for their sales pitch. a second interview is given to those that are interested in pursuing the sales position after the pitch. There were 3 ladies and 1 gentlemen there for the interview, and at the end of the "interview", 3 ladies walked out without interest and 1 gentleman stayed, not sure if he had follow up questions or what, but the 3 ladies all voiced our feelings of being scammed on our way out. People had to take a day off from work for this interview. Prior to scheduling an interview with candidates, an ethical company would disclose that it is a commission based sales job, and that you'd be required to drive around in the field for recruitments. It's a pyramid scheme type of sales, where you move up a branch if you complete a # of sales. There's nothing wrong with sales, but you shouldn't mislead serious job candidates with this nonsense. And if the goal was to educate the public via masking the interview process as a sales pitch, guess they succeeded in "educating" but failed miserably in winning the potential customers over since people walk out of the interview pissed off. The "interview" was consisted of explaining their sales packages and commissions. Case closed, it's a sales job. Stop lying and wasting peoples time.

Met with a manager who went over the requirements and ins and outs of the position. Once hired you do need to take State Exams for Insurance which does require you to study. Once you pass there is an opportunity to travel for training and do shadowing with other managers and fellow agents.

I received an unsolicited email inviting me to interview for a Benefits Specialist / District Coordinator position. Those titles don't accurately describe the position; It's a 100% commission sales position. As that wasn't anything I was interested in I declined to pursue the matter.

Please not the following is true for support, insurance sales, benefits consultant, and district manager position.

There are a few things one needs to understand. First and foremost this is a 1099 position. In fact all of the positions in the company are with the exception of one or two. This means you’ll be pretty much working as an independent contractor. Next you’ll be working under a district, not for the actual company itself. I interviewed with the Los Alamitos district. That being said expect a small office and desk space which you will have to rent if you do not wish to change spots everyday. Also there will be two interviews. The first one will be a presentation with a few other applicants in the room. The next will be a one on one. During the first interview please keep in mind they are trying to sell you the position. Thus there is a lot of white lies, and miscommunication. As an advice I would clear up anything that seems a bit good to be true.

In the one on one interview they’ll ask you general questions. There isn’t really a right or wrong answer. In general you will be hired if they think you can afford to pay for the following:
    52 hour insurance courses - $49
    Insurance exam - $83
    Live Scan - $70
Application to the Department of Insurance - $170

In general you will not be paid back, and won’t be able to complete everything for at least 3 weeks because that’s how long the live scan takes.

Once you pay everything and get licensed you will need to spend one to two weeks in training school which is not going to be in the place of the district. Most likely will be in Irvine. Finally after all of that is finished you will get assigned a district manager who will give you a list of their clients. After you will need to build your own clientele.

I have a ton of sales experience in the past, so this job appealed to me. However, you don’t need any experience at all do this. I personally rejected the offer not because anyone mistreated me, but because of how little growth I saw the model of the company would produce. Don’t let the numbers fool you. They will throw figures like 60k, but that’s something you’ll have to really work for. The same amount of effort doing Uber could get you those numbers.

The biggest con is that there is NO base pay. Everything is 100 percent commission. Secondly, would you want to work for a company which is not willing to invest a few hundred dollars to pay for the insurance certification or application fee?

My advice, don’t let them sell the position to you. Always ask yourself what they gain by hiring you. Be objective. Try to pull out all of the sales term by asking a question. For example, “we don’t hire just anyone” is a commonly used sales line they use.
