# A big cube is made of 10 x 10 x 10 small cubes. If the outside surface of that big cube was painted, then what is the number of cubes that have paint on them?

The number of cubes that are NOT painted is 8 x 8 x 8 = 512. Therefore, the number of cubes that are painted is the total (10 x 10 x 10) minus 512 = 1000 - 512 = 488 cubes

1st Method: Unpainted (the ones inside and not exposed) = 8 x 8 x 8 = 512 Painted = Total cubes - Unpainted = (10x10x10) - 512 = 488 2nd Method: 6 painted faces (A B C D E F) no of cubes on face A & B = (10 x 10 ) x2 = 200 no of cubes on face C & D = (10 x 8 ) x2 = 160 no of cubes on face A & B = (8 x 8 ) x2 = 128 TOTAL Painted = 200 + 160 + 128 = 488

I got the same question when I went for the interview a few months before you. Except the question was not "1000 cubes" but "1000 dices". My answer was all 1000 of them: they are dices, all have paint markings on them. I could tell there was a moment of awkwardness in the room when they got the unexpected answer. I later gave them the same answer as you did. I also declined the offer, but due to the bad reputation of the company.
