It's an interesting place to intern at because you get to see how a think tank works

    Inconvénients

No real cons, but as an intern, there really aren't big projects or challenges to take

    Avantages

Filled with bright, amazing scholars who will take the time to speak with interns and research assistants.

    Inconvénients

The leadership is not the finest--and the tension between it and scholars is palpable.

J'ai travaillé chez Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars à

    Avantages

Lovely community of scholars to network with, plenty of events to attend across the center.

    Inconvénients

Despite sharing a space with so many different departments, not enough cross-department collaboration still. Like with most think tanks, hard to move up starting from an entry-level position unless you have graduate degree(s).

    Avantages

Not your typical think-tank. Here it's all about the academics. Great experience working with a scholar-in-residence. The Wilson Center also puts on many great events. It's a great place to intern for students looking to get into academia or research.

    Inconvénients

Not really any cons for me.

    Avantages

Wilson Center is a strange federal/nonprofit hybrid, with some of the strengths and weaknesses of both model. On the plus side, the work includes access to a lot of interesting public and private events, with speakers and panelists including world-renowned experts and heads of state. Environment is collegial with a lot of social opportunities, including softball team, happy hours, etc. in addition to formal events and dinners, many of which are very impressive. Benefits are good, including a very generous Smithsonian contribution to the retirement package. (Furthermore, the TIAA package for Smithsonian includes access to a number of very good funds, that most nonprofits cannot access.)

    Inconvénients

The executive leadership does not seem to have a sense of its direction and goals, and is going to be in serious trouble under the Trump administration, both due to the Trump animosity toward scholarship and because of the Wilson Center's perceived or real Democratic party sympathies. In addition to this political challenge, there is a sharp divide -- in age, compensation, and clout -- between the assistants and associates and the Directors and Vice Presidents. There are a lot of highly paid VPs and Directors, but associates and assistants frequently don't have a clearly defined career path. The support offices -- HR, Finance -- seem to provide only minimal levels of support for the programs. Many of them seem to be feds in a comfortable position with minimal interest in customer service.

Je travaille chez Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars à

    Avantages

Interning at the Wilson Center is very intellectually stimulating. The Center usually has at least 5 events per week, in which some I attend for assigned work and some just out of my own interest in the field/topic. The work and staff are very international in their scope and perspective.

    Inconvénients

Interns are unpaid (some interns are in grad school or hold MA). Not much chances to get to know other staff interns.
