    Avantages

A lot to learn, the atmosphere can be great but obviously depends on your department and team so can be generalised

    Inconvénients

Pay is low, long hours, lots of commitment, as far as I can remember only 1/3 of PhDs get it done in 5 years. Most people need 6 years.

    Inconvénients

    Could have been cleaner.
Departments do not work well with each other which really hurts the entire operation

Je travaille chez Technische Universität Graz à plein temps (Plus d'un an)

    Avantages

Great freedom to pursue self-chosen research projects/topics.
Still acceptable payment (for public research in computer science). Flexible Working hours.

    Inconvénients

Often advice by older research staff(beyond post doc level) is sparse and not really related/relevant to own research problems - or even distracting from the important aspects. Professors seem oblivious to the real research problems at hand and are most of the time occupied with their (important but never ending) hunt for funding or just traveling around another conference (without actually presenting publications there).

New Research staff does not get proper support - I'm glad that I started my PhD elsewhere so I was able to start a lot more efficiently than how I see things develop for younger PhD students here at the TU Graz.

It is sometimes embarrassing to assist in teaching while being fully aware that a lecture is outdated in many spots, the corresponding practical exercise is lacking in didactics or overly focused with interchangeable / arbitrary technical details. But to improve the situation one would have to sacrifice too much of one's time for research.

Abundance of bureaucratic regulations - not just for PhD Students. Information on regulations is scattered over many places. Administrative staff often seems unmotivated and provides contradicting advice on bureaucratic regulations.

Ridiculously low funding to attend international conferences - If you are not a professor yet, that is.

    Conseils à la direction

Try to find ways to improve the funding situation for the staff directly involved in teaching and research. In my a opinion, it might very well be worth a try to look for ways to shift funding from either the excess of funding available for hardware or by streamlining the administrative staff and bureaucracy which is dragging many things down to sluggish levels. Also it might be a good idea to check whether certain professors (especially institute leaders) are doing their best to benefit the actual quality of research and teaching instead of just pushing the overall number (quantity over quality) of publications and giving totally outdated lectures - e.g. evaluation by clueless bachelor students is not a good quality measure for a lecture. Simplify the rules for students: Reduce number of attempts students have for a certain exam or exercise. Introduce simple but strict regulations on student plagiarism.

And as a general bottom line: While boasting about the excellent research and teaching at TU Graz might be satisfactory to professors at the management level and might convince administrative staff, inexperienced students and external partners, it might not be the best strategy in the long run. A good reputation alone can not whitewash internal realities indefinitely.

    Avantages

    Inconvénients

Too much focussed on the German language.

    Point de vue négatif

J'ai travaillé chez Technische Universität Graz en Contrat Permanent

    Avantages

    - Reasonable stipend
    - Reasonable work/life balance (very group dependent, ofc)

    Inconvénients

    - High changes of getting relocated to projects not related to your PhD
    - Strong favoritism from supervisors towards native-born students
    - High chances of enrolling to classes that are still lectured in German (or that at least have German-only teaching material)

    Conseils à la direction

I know this is highly project-dependent, but try to offer longer-term (>1 yr) contracts to foreign PhD students

    Avantages

The purpose of this position is to pursue a PhD. The Institute for Computer Graphics and Vision is a great research institute, which is performs top leading research.

    Inconvénients

This is not a permanent position, the continuation of the contract always depends on the availability of ongoing projects.

    Conseils à la direction

Many times, the PhD students are required to follow a lot of unnecessary bureaucracy rules just to purchase equipment necessary for their research. I think that bureaucracy is not bad, but in this case it requires too much time to comply with the rules. Please, take a look at this and make it easier for us to make our work! Thanks :D.
