    Avantages

    Salary, benefit, bonus and other incentives. Excellent training program, great opportunity for growth. Integrated oil & gas company, upstream portfolio diversified in many areas including in situ, oil sands and conventional resources.

    Inconvénients

    No hedging gets the company vulnerable to the decreasing oil price. Going through cost cutting, employee reduction, going through reorganization, in this process loosing valuable human resources after spending years of training and development on them.

    Keep up the good work. However, need to think about future strength of the organization while the company keeps loosing valuable employees in this downturn.

    -Co-workers are generally quite friendly and helpful when you need to ask for assist. -Company is big on training. If you are looking to further advance your skills, you will have access to a variety training both in-house and external. -Great place to gain experience as an EIT or intermediate level Engineer. Advancing to and past the senior can be quite difficult. -Pay and benefits are on par with other... major operating companies within the sector.

    Inconvénients

    -Company is constantly under a continuous state of organization change. As a result, it can be rather difficult as the business objectives seem to be constantly changing. -Company has an excessively large middle management section. At the Director/Manger/Front Line Leader levels, the ratio of management to employee ratio appears quite high in comparison to other companies. As result, there is a great deal of... micro-management. This style of management does not work well given that many of the members are professional engineers capable of work independently with minimum supervision. -People at Director, Manager, and Front Line levels very often lack the necessary leadership skills (mainly interpersonal and communication). This level of management seems to use the “I’m the Boss” style of management rather than promoting a collaborative team atmosphere.

    Senior level management should re-evaluate their needs for mid-level management. Better screening processes should be in place to ensure managers in these levels can be effective in supporting a collaborative team atmosphere and driving real results.

    Inconvénients

    Don't live their stated corporate values. My family was relocated from Calgary to Edmonton by Suncor (and I was working for them for years before the relocation), then after 3 years they decide to abandon the Edmonton operation due to cost cutting measures and tell everyone their is a place for them in Calgary (march 1). Fast forward seven weeks later after stringing everyone along and they finally met with the... employees and LAYED EVERYONE OFF. No offer to relocate my family back to Calgary which is their home that they sacrificed for my job, and where there are other jobs in my specialized line of work. After 5 years of loyal service I was simply abandoned here with no job and little prospects for my area of expertise in this town.

    Good benefits, good pay, good work-life balance, friendly colleagues, strong safety focus, fat profit margins on oil production and refining despite gross organizational inefficiencies.

    Inconvénients

    Workforce competence and knowledge level surprisingly subpar due to high turnover, high growth rate and inadequate training. This is surprisingly true even in management ranks. Management systems implementation uneven, poor in some areas like SAP. General workforce and managerial complacency toward company standards and procedures as a result of ambiguity and rapid growth outpacing training and management systems... development. Employee workarounds are commonplace due to ineffective workflows, contributing to even more ambiguity, inefficiency, low productivity, high turnover, and ultimately lower profits than might otherwise be possible.

    Business workflow management systems need to be remediated by promoting guys like me to (1) identify the ones that don't work well (2) replace the ones that don't work with workable systems (3) implement retraining of personnel to honor the work processes, and provide mechanisms for them to flag and take ownership in repairs to the systems that are broken. If management were to clean up the management systems,... productivitty would improve and employee turnover would go down.

    Avantages

    Suncor is a great place to work. People genuinely care about each other. Hard work is recognized tangibly with bonuses and extra effort awards. Safety is paramount.

    Inconvénients

    For a US based employee who does not want to relocate to Canada, advancement is limited. There is no way to become a member of the leadership team without spending significant time up north.

    Inconvénients

    Bureaucratic, HR processes take too long, improving work life balance but still requires improvement, lack of diversity, too much work - not enough time. Very little potential for upward movement for US citizens.

    Resource demand doesn't match goals. Too much work, too little time. Management determines deadlines without understanding resource implications.
