    Avantages

Some very smart, good colleagues and managers

    Inconvénients

Book pricing and author remuneration somewhat unusually tied to book length
    US office is not independent
Focus on quantity not quality throughout this international company

    Conseils à la direction

Management in the US is limited by the edicts of offices in The Netherlands and Germany. It is hard to imagine that it would ever be otherwise.

J'ai travaillé chez Springer International Publishing à temps plein (Plus de 3 ans)

    Avantages

Easy going environment. Heaven for those who can get away with not doing much work. Good work-life balance. Ample leave. Lots and lots of opportunity to travel.

    Inconvénients

Talking about Springer India specifically, salaries are low and not commensurate with qualification or experience. There is a dire need for better managers- the top management is abysmally bad. No transparency at all. No work from home option.

    Conseils à la direction

Please hire better people- at least for the important/managerial roles. The kind of people at top positions is ludicrous. Pay more if you want better people or want to retain the good ones.

J'ai travaillé chez Springer International Publishing (Plus de 5 ans)

    Avantages

Independent work and responsibility attain sales targets. Excellent healthcare program if the platinum level is selected for pre-tax salary deductions for the family. Interesting and extensive travel required for the job with a position covering between 5 US states and 2 countries. Good company reputation with clients. Many excellent people to work with.

    Inconvénients

Compensation program for sales is not up to standards for the industry. Commissions are not part of the compensation program. Bonus' is only paid formally one time per year, 4 months after the calendar year (fiscal year) ends. Base salary was approximately $25,000 below similar companies in the industry where I have worked. Inflexible business models that are out of date within the industry. Problematic CRM tool. High rate of turnover within support staff and outside sales. Limited opportunity. No additional bonus comp for inside sales support.

    Conseils à la direction

I would recommend evaluating and increasing your compensation programs for the entire outside sales and inside sales groups as well as the sales management teams to bring the compensation up to date with the industry and perhaps even become a leader. Don't turn a blind eye to the high levels of turnover. Evaluate the business models as they are now out of date with customer expectations and the industry.

    Avantages

    - Flexible work/life balance
    - Promote from within
    - co-workers are friendly and overall work environment is very pleasant.
    - The job is often "what you make of it" and there is room for creativity and input.
    - Professional development courses are offered (Sales/Marketing Academy), so you get trained on skills that are transferable to other companies.
    - Company is strong and looked to as an industry leader
    - Librarians love our products.
    - great insurance/retirement benefits

    Inconvénients

Communication: During the recent merger with Nature, management remained silent and did not acknowledge overall sense of dread/fear over changes to come. Even when there was no news, a regular (monthly? quarterly?) update from upper management just to say, "hey, there's still no news, hang in there/thanks for your patience & we understand you're anxious" would have gone a very long way.

Money: Pay is extremely low compared to market rate of similar jobs at competitor companies. If you move up to a different position, Springer is EXTREMELY unwilling to give significant or acceptable pay raises. The only way to be paid what you're worth is to leave and come back, which a few people have done. Which leads me to...

Turnover: Springer's not a bad place to work, but recent years have seen a very high turnover rate in the sales teams and it is affecting our reputation. A couple of people who have been put into management roles have been very aggressive/toxic to their staff, which might be one reason. Another is the reticence to give talent reasonable pay raises and promotions.

    Conseils à la direction

Acknowledge the talent you have and try to keep it. Don't stand on ceremony when negotiating pay raises: if you don't pay talent what they're worth, someone else will. Turnover is expensive. When you don't communicate regularly with the team, it sends the message, "you're not important enough to know what's happening". We understand if there is nothing to learn, but radio silence from your end is disconcerting. Try to be better about facilitating sharing among your teams. People are energized and inspired by learning what their colleagues are up to.
