    Inconvénients

    I keep seeing a lot of investments going into Global Internship Programs, “battle of the minds” and summer internship programs. That’s great but RAI keeps forgetting about their current employees. How about the people currents in trade marketing? There is nothing that is offered to them to help improve themselves or give different opportunities to be promoted. There’s a lot of talent in TM and it’s too bad RAI... can’t see that and potentially lose great employees.

    Great culture, facilities, environment, employee benefits, employee perks, resources, tools necessary for you to do your best work and on and on...

    Inconvénients

    Still a bump in the road every now and then- You may have a boss that is still from the old days, still a card carrying member of the good ol boys club, in which case you will be working for a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Outwardly, they appear to be progressive and collaborative when in actuality, they are threatened (insecure) about staying in their position of authority and entitlement. The organization will always... protect its own (the higher up the chain, the more protection).

    The San Francisco Region for years was once considered the cesspool of incompetence, negligence, and exceedingly poor core values. This could directly be attributed to the senior management in place as the culture created was not one of meritocracy but a crass version of a good ol' boys club. A hunger for inflated metrics driven from the top in San Francisco led to comprised values and behaviors (which senior... management simply looked the other way). Consistent diatribes on employees conceived from the top of the region created not only a hostile work environment but a low morale culture at best. Fortunately, senior management was replaced this year and the culture in San Francisco has completely changed for the better. Previously I would not have recommend others to join this organization based off of the previous administration, however if someone is looking for a place to start their career there is something special being built in the San Francisco region. There is a big difference between management and leadership - effective managers do things right, leaders do the right thing. Leadership has finally arrived to a snake-bitten region with morale at higher levels even in a tough legal environment. Continue to review the performances of not only TMs, AMs, DMs, KAMs but more importantly that of Senior Directors who directly set the culture of a region.

    Culture can be great which is based on your division manager. Company car is a great perk (minus the $175 month cost).

    Inconvénients

    The company has not changed its promotion process in the last 30 years! In order to move up they want you to relocate in order to go from TM -AM. Even if there is an opening available where you currently work, for some reason “the old boys club culture” wants you to prove you self my uprooting and doing the same they did. The issue I have with this is that it seems it’s more important to “earn your stripes” by... moving, rather than promoting the right talent I spend a decade at the company, and have moved 2 times for promotions, only to find out that other CPG companies don’t make you move this much, and can still be successful. Additionally, RAI only promotes from within the company. This is great for current employees, but by choosing this strategy the are alienating so much senior level talent doing amazing things. All because they do not have tobacco experience? Again, this goes back to my point that although RAI seems quite progressive on the surface, deep down it’s still an old boys club culture. To truly make it, you have to move 4-5 times and prove that you can endure that, versus your work results. My best advice to anyone at RAI: take their incredible training and implement those learnings at another company.

    Stop the outdated promotion process. I understand that working in new markets gets you diverse experience, but it’s not an end all be all. Also remember that this is big tobacco, in order to retain and keep talent you should look at hiring from the outside. There are many directors at RAI brining in 300-400K a year not having impact. Just because they moved 5 times should not mandate them a leadership role . Bring... in new perspectives at higher levels. The best thing I ever did was take the top notch training and apply to another CPG company, and it’s been the best move ever. Also, I didn’t have to move 3 times!

    Avantages

    -Great people -Great company culture - Great leadership team in the area I was in -The company stresses the importance of the TM role and you can have a great career and retire very comfortably in that position. -Great work/life balance. Management entrust that you are performing in your position. Not a whole lot of stress by management as long as you are executing on the initiatives. -Absolutely should be... considered one of the best companies you can work for. Made the wrong decision leaving. -The company invest in sales training that helps you in your everyday life.

    Inconvénients

    -Little chance of advancement if not mobile. Just the nature of a global company. -The TM role can get monotonous each day going in and out of convenience stores but that is the nature of the position. -The company changed the pay structure after I left but at the time with the TM top out on salary and no upward mobility it left in a place for no more growth financially. Still a comfortable living depending on... location.

    -Involve the TMs in local chain meetings and decisions as the tenured TMs are the constant in their territories as AMs are usually in the position for a short term. -Allow some opportunities for the TMs to get out of the field and do other projects from time to time.
