J'ai travaillé chez Public Health England à temps plein (Plus d'un an)

    Avantages

    - Honourable mission and values
    - People who are clearly passionate about their work
    - Interesting and varied work
    - Professionally challenging
    - By and large, lovely people to work with
    - Excellent work/life balance (Although this may largely depend on where you work/who your line manager is). Flexible working offered, everyone has laptops (IT offering is improving as well, although there are still some technological problems)

    Inconvénients

Heavy bureaucracy, very hierarchical - often lots of red tape and chains of command which may be fairly standard of the Civil Service. Can sometimes make it difficult to get things done - for example there are lots of different people who need to sign something off before it goes ahead.
No salary movement or negotiation - Pay is advertised on a scale, but you will always be appointed at the bottom end of that scale with no chance of negotiation.
Not very dynamic - Often parts of the organisation that like to have long discussions and meetings about something rather than taking action.
Has a lot of history - Organisation was previously multiple agencies which have now been brought together, but there are still parts of it that hold old grudges, or are deeply cynical about change. Can be tricky for a newcomer to understand. Often people who have been there for a very long time and are very entrenched in their ways, which can make life a little difficult.
Discrepancy between what management say and do - For example, management say they are taking a hard line on bullying and harassment and trying to tackle the problem, however there are very long gaps between action, and any action is often unsatisfactory and more of a 'box ticking' exercise than anything else.
Can sometimes be about who you know - Have seen various people get promotions/be appointed to positions because they knew someone, not necessarily because they were the best candidate.

    Conseils à la direction

You're well-meaning, but your lack of effective action does more harm than good.

    Inconvénients

    - management is caring less and less about public health expertise and recruitment does not value strong teams

    Conseils à la direction

    - If something is working dont try and change it.

Je travaille chez Public Health England à plein temps (Plus d'un an)

    Avantages

Not at all as busy as public testing laboratory
    Very few hours overtime
The base pay is higher than same position in private lab.
    Very flexible hours

    Inconvénients

While jobs are advertised on a pay bands, there is absolutely no moment up this band.
There are members of staff who have been here for years and as such do not do as much work as others, and I have never heard of anyone being punished or fired for lack of working hard.
Management continue to employee and keep completely useless staff and seem to never want to criticize or ultimately fire people who are unable to do the job.

There are the few not useless members of staff that are expected to pick up there slack and can expect to have to train other new starters and receive no recognition or pay incentive for taking on tasks which are meant to be done by higher bands.

    Conseils à la direction

Don’t hire useless people just because they tick a minority box and if people are unable to carry out basic tasks, fire them!
