J'ai travaillé chez Oxford University Press en contrat permanent (Plus de 8 ans)

    Avantages

Amazing brand recognition, great outward facing opportunities with brilliant academics. The mission is easy to promote, when compared with other educational publishers. Opportunities to do many tasks outside your job description (though they won't come with compensation).

    Inconvénients

Few opportunities for advancement at every level, very low pay for junior staff, despite middle management asking for increases to reflect the level of work being done, no efforts to hire and support diverse staff, harassment complaints heard but no follow through efforts made to resolve issues and set higher standards company wide through training and policies. Ever slipping editorial standards due to overburdened staff. Many time consuming company-wide cost saving initiatives that add more work to already full-workloads under the guise of efficiencies. Demoralizing hiring freezes.

    Conseils à la direction

Listen to your employees, particularly the ones that are willing to share hard truths with you. Act on the employee survey results. Acknowledge and embrace that the strength of any organization are the people who are part of it. Remember that those who are exhausted and overworked, and not listened to often interact directly with authors and customers, and their dissatisfaction will eventually trickle down, despite their best intentions. Remember that junior staff have a better pulse on what students and instructors are looking for than many members of senior management. Invest in marketing and better promoting the mission.

Je travaille chez Oxford University Press à plein temps (Plus de 8 ans)

    Avantages

    - benefits are good, flexible hours, ability to work remotely
    - people are friendly and professional, work is interesting
    - location is fine, although suburban it is accessible by transit and car

In the past, some individuals in senior management contributed to a toxic work environment through bullying and nepotism. Those individuals are no longer with the company (for the past couple years) and the climate has improved a great deal. This is intended to address earlier reviews that cited the toxic atmosphere.

    Inconvénients

    - salaries are low
    - little opportunity for significant advancement
    - small Canadian branch feels like the forgotten cousin in the global context of this large company

    Conseils à la direction

Have more realistic expectations of staff and offer greater reward for hard workers.

    Avantages

Excellent benefits, social atmosphere, everyone is very nice. Nice office in accessible location with shopping and restaurants around, free parking, and on major bus routes. Work days end at 4:30 which is much appreciated for those who commute around the GTA.

    Inconvénients

Compensation is an industry-wide issue which OUP does not escape.

    Conseils à la direction

Management within OUP Canada itself is not an issue. They report to OUP, a much bigger company.

    Avantages

Employees are highly educated and intelligent. A good place to learn and develop skills. Regular hours, Monday to Friday. Flex hours and limited work from home options available. Decent benefits.

    Inconvénients

Unstable industry. Little opportunity for advancement. Not great for someone looking for long term career stability. Open concept office. Relatively low pay. Low employee morale.

    Conseils à la direction

Loosen the power divide between upper management and employees. Be honest and realistic with employees about current situations and future plans. Have realistic expectations about how much work a person can do in office hours.

    Avantages

    -Great coworkers
    - Fantastic benefit program

    Inconvénients

-Lack of communication across branches and divisions
    - Difficult to get the tools needed to do your job effectively. Fosters an environment of complacency and frustration.
    - Upper management does not value employees (and frequently state how easily replaceable we are)
    - Very low pay (expect significantly below market average)
    - Very little innovation and openness to change.

    Conseils à la direction

    Look ahead!

And at least pretend to value your employees.

    Aucune opinion sur PDG

    Avantages

The benefits are great, I've made some good friends, the work itself is for the most part enjoyable and draws on my skill set, and the company definitely has name brand recognition among most external stakeholders. The office is nice to look at.

    Inconvénients

The work gets repetitive and boring after a while, I'm vastly underpaid, management makes confusing decisions, and in general the company is far too rigid for its own good. Systems are dated. Promotions are rare, because it's a small company. Staff are almost universally overworked, which does not improve the quality of results. Communication with other branches is insufficient and unclear orders are handled down, but at the same time other branches don't understand the unique needs of our local operation.

    Conseils à la direction

Modernize. Don't overwork your employees senselessly. Consider your employees' needs when making management decisions.
