Je travaille chez Oliver Wyman à temps plein depuis plus de 3 ans

    Avantages

Many smart people Provides a good toolkit

    Inconvénients

Some of the senior management are odd-balls Limited project diversity - too great a focus on regulatory projects that lack creativity and require modelling heavy skills (SAS, etc.) - that is reflected in many partners skill-set and mindset Culture of gossip and whispers Lacks same exit opportunities as MBB Extremely long hours

    Conseils à la direction

    Think more broadly

    Avantages

Strong analytic and consulting toolkit Friendly, down-to-earth atmosphere Entrepreneurial culture with few barriers to taking ownership and initiative

    Inconvénients

Weak consulting relationships and client list Specialization drives divisions and silos in the company (e.g. making it harder to share info) Salaries and bonuses may be lower than competitors

    Conseils à la direction

Invest more in relationship building at all levels with clients and alumni - focusing too much on the analytics can be a danger when competitors control access to the C-suite / Board

    Avantages

Opportunities to travel Work with very smart and motivated people

    Inconvénients

Even though you get to change projects frequently, there's a risk of getting stuck in certain type of projects and it's difficult to change and develop other areas of expertise

    Conseils à la direction

Be careful with burning people out, specially at the junior level. It's not always visible from higher levels of the organization...

    Avantages

Terrific learning experience for new college grads. Some very interesting work. Better than average compensation. Positions you well for other career paths. Opportunity to find some great mentors.

    Inconvénients

Work-life balance can suck. Partner (and Partner-track) personalities can suck (arrogance, disingenuousness, and lack of empathy, were common). Limited cross-industry collaboration since partners much more focused on hitting their own numbers. Significant risk of being stuck in Winston-Salem, NC, or an airplane hangar for years at a time (lost youth?).

    Conseils à la direction

It's been a few years since I left OW. But, I'd suggest that if you've moved the firm culture away from what it was like then, then you're probably doing a great job.

    Avantages

Oliver Wyman offers a challenging work environment, smart co-workers and competitive salary/benefits. The firm also does have unique intellectual capital which differentiates itself from other top-tier competitors. The firm requires consultants to specialize along vertical industries earlier than other firms which is valuable from a client standpoint.

    Inconvénients

Firstly, some practices rely on too few clients for revenue resulting in a very tenuous situation where one of two clients pull back. Secondly, the promotion from within culture, and deemphasizing MBA hiring leads to a unidimensional consultant profile and consultants lack a large network as they grow through their careers. Detrimental to growing business.

    Conseils à la direction

Diversify client base and expand talent acquisition to b-schools again. Current strategy exposes the firm to severely in downturns.
