Je travaille chez New School à plein temps (Pendant plus de 8 ans)

    Avantages

Good location with a few attractive buildings, but too bad they spend more money on architecture and signage than they do supporting research.

    Inconvénients

Poor compensation; extremely low level of workplace engagement; part-time faculty and lower-level staff are treated like second-class citizens; full-time faculty are forced to perpetuate this treatment (e.g., by ensuring part-time faculty don't have opportunities to move into more permanent jobs).

    Conseils à la direction

You're not the only university in the New York City nor the country. A majority of the full-time faculty in my department go on the job market every year and every year one or two people leave for better jobs elsewhere. Wake up. Any one with any business sense knows that low retention, low workplace engagement, and distrust are bad for an organization in the present and future.

J'ai travaillé chez New School à temps partiel

    Avantages

TEDC is plugged into some of the leading causes and advances regarding environmental sustainability in the fields of waste, environmental justice, and city-level resiliency and adaptation policies.

    Inconvénients

The center is going through some growing pains so employees are often asked to do work outside of their designated roles. The longer I was there the less engage I felt because my direct supervisors never bothered to check in with me.

    Conseils à la direction

    Better engage your employees!

J'ai travaillé chez New School en Contrat Permanent

    Avantages

    Great place to work overall.

    Inconvénients

The New School University technical department is the worst ever. No budget to improve the network, network managers that have no clue how to manage a Enterprise Network Environment and the turnover is high. Here is a summary of my experience within the network team at New School.

    1. Terrible technical management
    2. Network Managers manage by intimidation
    3. Terrible benefits for new employees. I was with New School for 60 days with no benefits and was told it would
    4. Network managers have no clue how to manage a large VoIP and Network Enterprise
    5. Network Managers don’t understand the value of using Cisco Partners
    6. High turnover in the Networking and VoIP department
    7. No budget to improve their VoIP Network so you will be hired to just manage their old network
    8. They will tell you it’s everyone else that was the problem but you will soon see that the managers are the reason for the poor network environment at the New School

J'ai travaillé chez New School à temps partiel (Pendant plus de 3 ans)

    Avantages

The relationships you build with the people in Supervisor and Student worker Level.
The relationships you build with students and the programs they get to put on can be really fun and the opportunity to create a real impact in a students life is the most rewarding part of the department.
Recommend only because of the housing perk and residential impact.

    Inconvénients

Seems as though management does not like to hear about student worker feedback on their management skills. There is a lot of "because we said so" decisions while there is also very little options for them to flexibly voice their opinions on changes due to them making meetings when most students have class and cannot participate. There have been many times where being a student and focusing on their education has come second or third to being an RA and many times where they have been told their feelings or thoughts are not of concern only that of the residents they look after while HR says that any work related issues cannot be handled by them as they are contracted as student workers and not full-time employees which then puts them in a position where they are forced to endure a difficult work situation.

    Conseils à la direction

Conduct exit Interviews to see legitimate feedback. RA's and other employees feel as though any little mishap or speaking up will get them fired which is not great for morale and this is also why there is a lack of feedback during the time of employment. When RA's voiced opinions about training there seemed to be a wall rather than an open table for discussion. Exit interviews and evaluations from the student staff would be great to see how they feel and how everyone can improve. Listening to decisions even about small things like organization of spaces would be nice as it gives some sense of being on a team rather than constantly being told what to do. To push this idea of being a family but then treating RA's like machines programmed to create community is very confusing. Take into consideration that they are not career RA's because once the RA/Student employment is over, the days they took off or the jobs they get fired from for RA training and arbitrary in-services will reflect in their careers after this and difficulty when pursuing career opportunities. They want to have fun doing the job but please consider how their lives will be after since there is no assistance finding housing or a job after they are done. All of this while they are also told to pack up and move out just after they were conducting programs or finished a duty shift.

Keep in mind that they still work hard for their positions and take on the emotional trauma that comes from that job. All of this, just to be told their feelings don't matter is very inappropriate and misleading during the on boarding process.

J'ai travaillé chez New School en Contrat Permanent (Plus d'un an)

    Avantages

Across the university, there are some of the most creative, kind, welcoming, wonderful people you have ever met who exemplify the mission of the university to a T.

    Inconvénients

There are also incredibly toxic people who completely flout the mission of the university. There are people who create a culture of mistrust and paranoia in others across the university, which serves to block open and effective communication. As such, the university as a whole is quite dysfunctional, since different areas don't trust each other enough to communicate. The toxic people also chase away the good employees, leading to incredibly high turnover rates. Leadership does nothing to remove the toxic people or sanction their actions and they are simply allowed to work unencumbered. They also continue to hire more toxic people who clearly do not fit the mission of the university, leading to a further degradation of the culture.

    Conseils à la direction

Listen to your lower-level staff when they tell you about toxic members of your team and take immediate action to solve issues.
