Je travaille chez Big 5 Sporting Goods à plein temps (Pendant plus de 10 ans)

    Avantages

When I started with Big 5, I had only intended to stay for a couple years. I’m now on year eleven. Big 5 keeps their stores small, and focuses very much on customer service. They operate in a very fair and consistent manner with employees and customers. The overall culture is a good one.

    Inconvénients

Wages/pay seem to be a good deal under market rate. however, our insurance is amazing and employee contribution to insurance is quite low.

    Conseils à la direction

Invest more in manager compensation. It is the single reason that I would consider leaving the company.

Je travaille chez Big 5 Sporting Goods à temps partiel (Plus d'un an)

    Avantages

I love the fact that I'm able to have more personal, face to face interaction with customers, without sacrificing my ability to do my job. In my experience at 3 different stores in a variety of sizes and management styles, I think they do an excellent job at picking mid-level management employees - they seem to go for people who know what they're doing, instead of looking for those who fit some hyper-specific retail mode.

Hard workers are respected and recognized, and hours are fairly flexible.

The smaller, more personal store style also means that you don't get lost in a corporation - I have developed real, professional connections with people I genuinely care about here, and it's made my job that much more fulfilling.

    Inconvénients

I have been asked many times by many different coworkers, subordinates and supervisors both, why I have chosen to avoid a manager position - the answer is simple. Although it's great that the standard for quality of work is fairly high, I see that managers are expected to be the end-all be-all of knowledge, and are often held accountable for mistakes that are not always under their control.

Additionally, the style of this company is to encapsulate the small, neighborhood store feel, and unfortunately with that comes with a few downsides. If your management lets it go on, customers often expect you to hold their hand and almost shop and make their decisions for them. Very few employees are offered large amounts of hours - at one store there were employees getting 3-4 hours a week, every week, not by their choice - the only ones getting over 15 hours were people who had been working at that specific location for years, and the full timers.

Big 5 is great for a side gig, or if you manage to get employed as a full timer, but you are very limited as a part-timer in terms of getting rewarded for the work you do.

    Conseils à la direction

Reward dedicated employees with more full time positions and you will lose less of your most valuable employees to those companies willing to give them competitive schedules
